‘Farmhouse Rustic’ is a trend that many believe took the place of the early 2000’s ‘Shabby Chic’ explosion. The idea of Upcycling the old into new is certainly at the heart of the “Farmhouse Rustic’ style. While the “Farmhouse Rustic’ style can aptly be used in every room of your house, Fireplaces and Bathroom seem to highlight the strengths of this decorating trend.
Insidecorate is a great website highlighting the Farmhouse Rustic style! If you are looking for inspiration and have a time on your hands….pop on over to their website.

Looking to start a home project this spring? Thinking of maybe doing it yourself? While channeling your inner JoAnna & Chips Gaines could be fun, it also could cost you a lot more than you expect.
Here are a few tips to think about before you decide to DIY or call a professional!
Tip #1: How much is that Weekend Warrior Project really going to cost you once you figure in the time and labor?
Are you looking at switching out some old faucets or painting a laundry room? Maybe you are looking to update your back splash with some beautiful new glass tile? These are all project perfect for the weekend DIY’er. A few trips to the hardware store, a few hours of hard work yield amazing results!
But if you are looking to install/refinishing a hardwood flooring? Think about all of those extra’s: do you have a power sanders? Do you have a nail gun? Did you remember to add 10-15% overage due to defects in the wood? What about time? A project you promised your wife would only take three days is stretching into day five. Kids are walking all over the new wood, the poor cat doesn’t know what to think of all of the noise and mess…That is why jobs like these go a lot more smoothly when done by professionals. They have already invested in the quality tools needed to get the job done efficiently! They know how to estimate the proper amount needed to get the job done and they will do it as quickly and effectively as possibly!
Tip #2:Is this really something you can do?
“Sometimes there’s overconfidence. Dean Bennett, president of a Colorado-based design and construction firm, has seen many instances in which homeowners thought they knew everything, but fell short. Some things are just not as easy as you might think, he says. Say the idea is moving a wall to create some extra bathroom space. This could involve moving the plumbing in the basement, adding new floor framing, rerouting electrical wires, removing and replacing trim on the wall, matching the wall texture to the original, and painting.”*
A good rule of thumb is if it needs permits or requires inspection by licensed professional…..Don’t do it yourself. It is going to save you a lot of time and money if you simply have it done right the first time!
Tip #3: Are you really going to save much if you DIY?
After obtaining the correct permits, renting or buying the necessary tools…..are you really saving as much money as you thought? Before you DIY, call around and see about some estimates. Chances are you will be surprised at how little your savings would be if you did it yourself and the extra money spent is worth the time, effort and lack of stress!
So if you are looking to some flooring DIY, want to make sure you are saving time and money…..give us a call here at THE CARPET HOUSE, INC! As always we offer free measure’s and no-obligation estimates! Call us today at (815) 772-8846.

Next is a fantastic bathroom DIY before and after project!
Melissa shows the redo of various projects done. Like us here at the Carpet House, she loves a good before and after post! This post of her bathroom redo lives up to high standards!
This post highlights the redo of her bathroom. As she says it is not to big but not small by any accounts….so finding the right color choices was important.
What we liked best about this post is her choice of paint and floor tile! Grey is the new trend and her photos highlight how beautiful and calm the right color grey can be.
Interested in learning more about the 2016 Color Trends…..we have a post about that!
Our next blog that has a pretty fantastic DIY Redo is The Handmade Home. For Ashley and her husband Jmnin, it all started with a bit of mold in the bathroom.
The bathroom went from choppy and dated to open and airy. The closed in shower was opened up with glass doors and the dated tan tile was transformed with beautiful white wall tiles and a beautiful mosaic tile floor.
This Redo made our list because of the detail included in the blog/article. Pictures show just how damaging one leak can be and how in-depth a full bathroom remodel can get.

Vintage is awesome and this idea has my wheels spinning. Taking a vintage bicycle and upcycling it into a vanity is stunning….and take a look at how they used the bicycle basket. ❤
I am a huge fan of antique furniture, so this idea of using a side table as a vanity is love at first sight!
The key to a beautiful bathroom is first impressions and this reclaimed barn door has it all! BEAUTIFUL!!
Last but not least, little touches like this make reclaimed DIY projects so much fun! How can you resist such a neat idea?!?
Arabesque Ceramic Tile is the latest trend among designers and homeowners. It is easy to see why…with its graceful lines and subtle pattern. This is the type of ceramic that never goes out of style.
While more expensive than a traditional glazed ceramic, this style is worth the extra expense because it adds just the right touch of beauty and sophistication.
This is the tile that when people walk in your home and see it, they walk out trying to find a place in their own home to imitate it!
It’s that beautiful!
At The Carpet House, we carry a georgeous line of Abaresque Ceramic. Here are a few samples….
The darker and bolder colors are simply amazing when installed on a backsplash!
So if you are in search of a beautiful classic way to spruce up your kitchen, stop in and ask to see our Abaresque Tile!!
